Fiesta Tableware is making waves this spring as it commemorates its 90-year legacy with a brand new color introduction—lavender. Celebrated for its vibrant and classic dinnerware, Fiesta has been dazzling homes since 1936, beginning its journey during the Great Depression when it sought to add a splash of color to American dining experiences.
A Colorful Journey from Depression to Modernity
On a recent visit to the Fiesta factory in Newell, West Virginia, TODAY’s Dylan Dreyer explored the history and craftsmanship that have made Fiesta a staple in many households. The factory’s design director, David Neer, shared insights into how Fiesta introduced color to American dinnerware, which had traditionally been colorless. He recounted how the company’s founder drew inspiration from colorful dishes during a trip to California, sparking an idea that would reshape how Americans perceived tableware.
"Fiesta came on the scene with casual, fun pieces designed for daily use," said Neer, further emphasizing its mission to “make people happy.” Today, Fiesta produces around three million dinnerware pieces annually, all while maintaining a commitment to handcrafted quality.
The Meticulous Crafting Process
At the helm of Fiesta’s production process is COO Matt Wicks, a fifth-generation family owner who provided a behind-the-scenes look at how each piece is created. The crafting journey begins underground, where raw materials are combined with water to form a slip. This mixture is purified before being molded, glazed, and ultimately fired in kilns, yielding the glossy finish that is characteristic of Fiesta products.
The painstaking process takes approximately 36 hours to complete a single piece, underscoring the dedication to quality and craftsmanship that remains integral to Fiesta’s identity.
