It’s finally here….the day that I have dreaded with the whole renovation. Floor refinishing.
We are living in our basement for the next 6 days because they have sealed off the 2nd level, and are sanding and staining the first level. Today they moved the rest of the furniture and started sanding. I’m not sure I can still hear as we stayed in the basement all day and heard the very loud machines above us.
I shouldn’t complain, as our basement has all the amenities of a small apartment except the part about the the kitchen. I’ve made a makeshift one with small fridge, microwave, toaster and dishes. I went out today and purchased fresh fruit, cold cuts, bread, and drinks. We should be okay for breakfast and lunches (cereal is a beautiful thing…), but dinners will have to be thought out. Actually, we’ve been invited by neighbors and friends for the next three nights, so really we only have to worry about dinner for three nights.
I think we’ll make it. (However if the polyurethane finish ( 3 coats) is too toxic smelling, we may be finding hotel rooms that take dogs!)
In other renovation news, we finally finished our kitchen and added a back splash. Do you remember how our kitchen looked last August? Here’s a pic:
Then we had our cabinets painted:
This week (one year later) we painted and added a back splash. We chose subway tile to match the cabinets. We felt it gave the walls a seamless look.
I hesitated a bit before posting this pic as it doesn’t represent the color of the paint or the tile very well. I’ll take a better one (with better lighting) when I can actually access the kitchen!
All we need now is a valance for the window and some bar stools and our kitchen remodel will be done.
I have to say, I’m not looking forward to the next 5 days. Total house disruption is never fun, but add in two teenagers, a dog and school starting in just 8 days, and it’s downright scary.
Wish me luck!
